Symptoms of toxicity
Death is preceded by the fear of making the wrong move.
When people have a fear of making the wrong move, they protect themselves by making no moves at all.
Organisations usually become irrelevant and collapse not because of doing things wrong, but rather because of not doing anything new.
And what drives this 'not doing anything new' behaviour?
Fear.
Fear of getting it wrong. Fear of ridicule. Fear of getting fired.
Organisations that are confident, back themselves, believe in their people, are comfortable with uncertainty - do not fear failure.
And that's because success for confident organisations is defined as progress forward, rather than defence of past success.
Confident companies are learning companies - and you can't learn anything by not making mistakes.
