The difference between leaders and managers

Depending on what needs to be achieved, it's important to know which is which.

People willingly follow a leader because they believe that doing so will get them to where they want to go themselves.

They share a vision of a better future with the leader and freely join the journey.

Leaders don't hold any kind of authority over anyone; nobody is obliged to comply.

Which is the opposite of what a manager does.

Using a toolkit that includes practices of command and control, managers get subordinates 'in line' and 'under control'; busy delivering an end goal that is of the manager's choosing.

A manager's energy is spent keeping individuals on track, a leader's energy is spent enabling everyone to move forward together.
