Spotting poor strategy

The majority of what gets labelled as 'strategy' even in big organisations who pay millions to have a CEO craft a great strategy to guide them - is not good strategy at all.

Strategy work involves judgment and decision-making under conditions of competition, complexity and uncertainty.

The whole point of strategy is to develop an informed approach to creating the future of an organisation based on incomplete information. Because of this, strategy work is difficult to do and it takes practice to develop confidence and competence in the art and science of the discipline.

This nonsense is often what is labelled as 'strategy' by JSE-listed companies.

And these days running a big organisation without a carefully crafted informed approach as to how the future will successfully be explored, is a fatal mistake to be making.
