From now onwards

I was reminded the other day of something a well-known CEO, of a well-known startup, once said...and did.

The startup had previously taken significant funding, and is so often the case, had over the course of a few years, exhausted the money.

Time was running out for the company. The inevitable was staring them in the face if they didn't make some hard choices.

Then one day, the CEO made a simple announcement.

"From now on", he said, "we will focus on being profitable."

That was it - a final decision had been made; from then on the company would pursue profit. The route to profit wasn't at first very obvious, but a public commitment had been made to go on the journey.

Making bold decisions and fully committing to your plan is at the heart of purpose-led strategy.

The tricky bit is that these judgements have to be made often with limited factual information as to how the future might play out, which is where hiring a good futurist obviously comes into play (call me if you need help here, I know a guy).

From now onwards - what decision are you prepared to make today that you will never think about again?
