The global MICE market (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) is estimated to be a $1 trillion industry, South Africa's small slice of that is just $6.6 billion (less than 1%). There's much room to grow with the right product and marketing.
The mayoral committee member for economic growth, James Vos, and his team have launched the This is Cape Town to promote the city as a tourist destination in 55 global destinations, which is already yielding good results.
Cape Town International welcomed a record 11.1 million two-way passengers in 2025, which equates to a 7% year-on-year increase. These numbers sound impressive, but in comparison...a country like France, on average, records over 100 million international visitors annually.
So the drive to grow the local visitor economy is just starting.
Perhaps what South Africa hasn't as yet really capitalised on yet, is that this country is the home of the bosberaad, we're the world champions of 'the negotiated way forward' - facilitating collaborative thinking that co-creates a way forward together is what we are the most famous for.
